Texting while driving and cellphone usage in vehicles has drastically increased in the past few years. It is very common to see people on their phones while driving, attempting to multi-task and stay on pace with our frantic society. Texting While Driving Laws in New York
In the state of New York, texting while driving is strictly prohibited. The laws that were recently enacted to prevent texting while driving also include the reading of any text-based messages, such as e-mail and websites. The ban on texting while driving recently went into effect in New York and allows police officers to stop vehicles and ticket drivers who were texting while driving, even if that was their only offense.
Even though an official ban on texting while driving is recent, New York was one of the first states to ban the use of hand-held cellphones in vehicles.
Other In-Vehicle Distractions Can Cause Serious Accidents
While texting while driving and the use of cellphones in cars may be newer distractions, there have always been a number of in-vehicle distractions that often contributed to accidents. Any time someone takes their attention off the road, accidents can occur. Our firm not only handles texting while driving accidents, but also accidents stemming from distractions such as:
- Eating while driving
- Listening to headphones while driving
- Reading while driving
- Applying makeup while driving
- Distracted by other people in the car (such as with kids in the back seat or a teenage driver with a car full of friends)
